Food and drinks in Frankfurt

Frankfurt´s traditional hospitality

Frankfurt Hostel: Frankfurt cuisine

Frankfurt cuisine

Frankfurt´s well-known traditional hospitality means enjoying Frankfurt´s local drink 'Apfelwein' together with hearty dishes like sausage and kraut or the famous “green sauce“, made with fresh herbs in one of the many cosy old-fashioned restaurants. Such places nearby are „Gemaltes Haus“ and „Wagner“, where local people like to gather, only a 15 min. walk away on the other side of the river. Even closer is the elegant but cosy „Klosterhof“ next to the old karmelite monastery, where not just Frankfurt, but all-German cuisine is served.

Frankfurt Hostel: In the hostel area

In the hostel area

In the area around the main station and the hostel there is good-value international take-away food available till late. Chinese restaurant 'Jade' offers many main courses at less than 5 EUR , in the restaurant 'Acapulco' italian and international food is served till late. Turkish, arab, indian or other immigrants´ restaurants are common in Frankfurt anyway.

Frankfurt Specialities

Frankfurt´s traditional drink: Apfelwein

is home-made in many places. It is a fruity and very dry sort of cider and slightly more alcoholic than beer. It comes in special patterned glasses or, in larger amounts, in special earthenware jugs.

To eat with that

we recommend a 'Handkaes', a very low fat cheese mostly eaten in a marinade of vingar, oil onions and spices.

For vegetarians and everybody else

The famous 'Frankfurter Gruene Sosse', a creamy sauce with seven special freshly chopped herbs, that goes so well with almost everything: meat, fish, boiled eggs, potatoes etc...
